Re: What is the meaning of life?

I follow the Bible reading plan from YouVersion by Nicky and Pippa Gumbel. I love how they integrate daily reading from both Old and New Testament and align them into a single relevant topic. And today’s topic is What is the meaning of life?

The devotion started with

Jonathan Gabay, a thirty-one-year-old professional writer, was facing employment challenges and stress when he hit rock bottom. He began to ask questions about the meaning of life. He wrote to people in all walks of life: world leaders, the homeless, Oscar-winning actors, philosophers, comedians, taxi-drivers, teachers, explorers and prisoners on death row.

You can read some of the interesting replies in the link above.

If I may, I would like to ask the same question to the Bear world. I am curious if anybody on Bear would respond with their answers. Just a short one liner would be great.

For me personally, I was asked this question in my Senior High orientation, I could not recall where I got the answer from, but I answered with an acronym in Indonesian:

HIDUP: Hari Ini Datang Untuk Perjuangan

Which translates to:

25+ years has passed, I think I would stick to my answer. Life is a struggle, a struggle to learn new things in childhood, a struggle through schools and universities, a struggle to look for jobs, a struggle to build a life, a struggle in finding love, a struggle of raising a family, a struggle with personal or family’s sickness, a struggle with griefs, and ultimately, a struggle of finding meaning in life.

Every person will try to make sense of life by going through a series of experiences, people they meet, things going in the world, past and present. The answer for everyone would vary, but by the grace of God I was raised in a Christian family and that’s how I came to know Jesus Christ. It does not mean I never doubted God’s existence and love, oh sure I did and I think most people will doubt Him in the midst of struggles in life, especially facing terminal illness and sudden disasters. But through everything, for me personally, there are only a few possible truths for life to be meaningful in spite of all of the chaos in the world, that God is in control, yet this current world is a constant struggle of good and evil forces, thus He will deliver the final judgement.
